Old-Fashioned Sautéed Spinach

Sautéed spinach is one of those simple side dishes that proves you don’t need a long list of ingredients to make something delicious. For generations, home cooks have prepared fresh greens in a skillet with little more than butter or oil and a few seasonings. It’s quick, thrifty, and an easy way to turn a big bunch of fresh spinach into a flavorful side to serve alongside almost any meal.

This classic sautéed spinach recipe keeps things just as simple. Fresh spinach cooks down until tender while still retaining its vibrant color, with garlic adding just the right amount of savory flavor. It takes only minutes from start to finish, making it a practical side dish for everything from a weeknight supper to a holiday dinner. It’s an old-fashioned kitchen staple that stays a classic for a reason!

Ingredients

  • 5 Ounces Fresh Spinach (a typical bag)
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Minced Garlic
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Pepper

Helpful Kitchen Tools

Instructions

  1. Add olive oil and garlic to a medium skillet over medium heat.
  2. As the pan starts to warm up and the oil thins out, add the spinach by a handful at a time. As the spinach cooks down, add more spinach until it is all in the pan. Stir gently so it doesn’t burn.
  3. When the spinach has reduced by about half (about 3 minutes of cook time), season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the spinach for another 2-3 minutes, until you have your desired consistency.

Prep Tips:

  • Yield – This recipe makes about 1 cup of cooked spinach, or about 1-2 servings.
  • Storage – Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Do not freeze.
  • Types of Spinach – You can use your favorite spinach for this recipe. I’ve used baby spinach and regular spinach and both turned out perfect.
  • Pan Prep – Add the garlic and oil to the pan before it is hot, so the garlic heats up slowly. This will create the best flavor.
