“Fire Crackers” Seasoned Crackers

“Fire Crackers” are easy to make, inexpensive to prepare, and fabulously tasty snack to serve with soup, salads, or just on their own! Fire Crackers are a seasoned saltine crackers that are packed with zesty flavor, the flavor gets even better over time!

These don’t even require any baking though the process will make them look like they were. So, the recipe is easy but you will have to allow about six hours for them to do their thing…becoming delicious!

I’d never experienced Fire Crackers until I moved to Texas 20 years ago. I’ve also seen these called “Alabama Fire Crackers,” which seem to be the same thing.

These first showed up in the break room of the college where I worked, simply left on the counter in a plastic bag. Since we all pretty much ate anything that showed up, I was happy to give these a try.

I loved them immediately and always was happy to see a batch of Fire Crackers make their periodic appearance in the break room!

Another place I had them was in my favorite lunch restaurant where a few were served alongside chicken, ham, tuna, or egg salad.

Call me uncurious, but I never got the recipe or asked what they were called. I thought of them as spicy crackers or saltines.

Fast forward to 2024 and I had long left that job and the town where I had occasionally eaten those crackers.

A while back, I had made a recipe for Granny’s in the Kitchen that used one sleeve of saltines. I had the rest and I wondered if there was something I could do with them.

I remembered the spicy saltines. I texted a friend who had worked there at the time and she gave me the basics of the recipe. It’s light oil, a packet of ranch seasoning, and lots of chili pepper flakes.

You can certainly go for the basic recipe because it’s a good one! However, I decided to play with it a little.

The first thing was to reduce the amount of crushed chili peppers. They are ESSENTIAL to the taste, so don’t leave them out. But I didn’t want the crackers so hot, I couldn’t enjoy them, so I cut the amount in half. If you enjoy a spicy snack, you can use the original amount.

Next, to liven up the flavor a bit and add some more color, I added garlic powder, onion powder, dill, and parsley. Not a lot but I think it makes them extra good.

It only takes five minutes to mix up the ingredients.

After that, you’ll have about 30 minutes where you turn the bag over every 5 minutes to make sure all the crackers get well-coated.

You’ll have to trust the process here! The crackers, oils, and spices will not look or taste very tasty at this point.

However, after a few hours the oil is absorbed and the seasonings dry up and the Fire Crackers will be ready for snacking!

  • 1-2 TB of red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt)

Prep Tips

  • Storage – Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • Seasoning – I tried this recipe with 3 different seasoning packets including Hidden Valley. I liked them all and couldn’t tell a huge difference. The batch with Hidden Valley was just a little tangier. I also really love the taste of the extra added seasonings. My first batch I only used the garlic and onion powder. But the second batch, I wanted it to look more festive so I added dill and parsley for color. Still delicious.
  • Crackers – The recipe I learned uses Saltine crackers, but you could substitute Ritz crackers, Club Crackers, or mini saltine crackers, whichever you prefer or have on hand.
  • Spice – The original recipe calls for 1 ½ TB of crushed chili peppers. I used about ¾ a TB. That was plenty for me. But you do you. If you like it hot, go for the full amount. The crackers look pretty with the full amount, but they will be hot.
  • Oil – I used canola oil. Any light oil should do. I tried it with ¼ cup of olive oil in the total amount to see if that made the flavor better. I couldn’t really tell.
  • Timing – When you first mix these up, they will seem like they have a lot of oil and not much taste. Just trust the process. In a few hours you will be amazed at the transformation. The firecrackers need about six hours to absorb the oil and dry.
