This vintage Dirt Cake is a nostalgic no-bake dessert with a fluffy chocolate pudding mousse, crumbled Oreo “dirt,” and gummy worms on top.

Dirt Cake
If you grew up in the ’80s, there’s a good chance you remember dirt cake showing up at family parties and potlucks. This vintage Oreo Dirt Cake is one of those nostalgic desserts that instantly brings back childhood memories.
With a decadent mousse-like base made from chocolate pudding, cream cheese, and Cool Whip, this dessert is rich, fluffy, and full of chocolate flavor. It’s finished with a generous layer of crumbled Oreos that create the classic “dirt” look while adding a little crunch that contrasts perfectly with the smooth, creamy filling. And of course, no dirt cake is complete without a handful of gummy worms on top to lean into the fun theme!
Growing up, this was one of those special treats my mom would make every once in a while. I remember begging her to make dirt cake, and when she did it always felt like a celebration. It’s simple, classic, and just as fun to make now as it was to eat back then! My kids loved it and I think this will definitely stay a tradition in my house too! — Stacey

Ingredients
- Oreo cookies – use a food processor to chop into fine crumbles
- Cream cheese – soften by letting it come to room temperature, so it will be easier to blend
- Powdered sugar – or confectioner’s sugar
- Whipped topping – such as Cool Whip
- Milk – you can use whole milk, or even plant-based milk
- Instant chocolate pudding mix – 3.9 ounce boxes
- Gummy worms – for decoration
Helpful Kitchen Tools
- Food processor – to chop up the Oreo cookies into crumbles
- Large bowls – for mixing the pudding and the cream cheese/Cool Whip
- 9×13 inch casserole dish – for layering the dessert
Instructions
- Mix cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, and Cool whip together until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the milk and pudding. Fold the pudding into the cream cheese mixture.
- Chop the Oreo cookies in a food processor until you have fine crumbs.
- Scoop the chocolate mixture in the baking dish and spread evenly. Fill the rest of the dish with a generous layer of the Oreo crumbles and decorate with gummy worms.

Prep Tips:
- Soften the cream cheese – Let it come to room temperature before mixing so the filling turns out smooth and lump-free.
- Instant pudding works best – Use instant chocolate pudding mix so the filling sets quickly and keeps that fluffy mousse-like texture.
- Crush Oreos finely – A food processor makes the easiest “dirt,” but you can also place the cookies in a zip-top bag and crush with a rolling pin.
- Chill before serving – If you have time, refrigerate the dirt cake for at least 1–2 hours so the layers set and the flavors come together.
- Add gummy worms last – Place them on top just before serving so they stay bright and soft.
- Storage – Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
