Easy Taco Dip

This tasty taco dip appetizer will be a hit at any party or get-together! This taco dip features all of your favorite taco fixin’s layered together for dipping. It’s pretty and colorful and best of all…it is delicious!

This is such a fun dish to make and share. You can make it right ahead of serving if you need to and it tastes great. It only takes about 10 minutes to whip up this crowd-pleaser!

I first started making this to take to parties or girl’s night over 30 years ago. Back then, I did not have the avocado layer—they just weren’t that common where I lived. However, I love avocados and guacamole, so I think it’s a great addition to this dip.

Here’s a breakdown of the layers:

  • Refried beans
  • Guacamole
  • Zesty sour cream layer
  • Shredded cheese
  • Tomatoes, olives, and green onions

You can also customize the final layer with your favorite taco toppings!

Pair this with your favorite tortilla chips and you’ve got a treat that will be a hit! — Sara

Ingredients

  • 1 can refried beans
  • 3 avocados with lemon juice (or 1 cup guacamole)
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1/2 packet of taco seasoning mix (or 1TB homemade taco seasoning)
  • 8 ounces grated cheddar cheese
  • 3 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 small can of sliced black olives, drained
  • 4 stalks of green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Line the bottom of your dish with the refried beans. I mashed them up in a bowl before spreading them in the dish.
  2. Gently spread the guacamole or mashed avocados on top of the bean layer.
  3. Whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise and half a package of taco seasoning. Spread this sour cream mixture on top of the guacamole.
  4. Sprinkle about 8 ounces of shredded cheese on top of the sour cream layer.
  5. Dice three tomatoes and scatter on top of the cheese. Try to leave behind the liquid-y part of the tomatoes so they don’t water down the dish. Drain the black olives and add to the dish. Finish with the sliced green onions.

  • I made my own guacamole for this recipe, but to save time you could instead use prepared avocados or store-bought guacamole. These days you can find prepared (mashed) avocados in the refrigerated part of the produce department. Or you can buy pre-made guacamole. Or you can mash up your own avocados. But since avocados can be unpredictable, I do like using the already prepared kind because, let’s face it, cutting into an avocado that isn’t quite ripe or has turned brown is disappointing at best!
  • If you can’t find taco seasoning in the international foods aisle or the Mexican food section, try looking in the boxed foods aisle. That’s where I found it at my grocery store.
  • You can use any shape serving dish for this dip: square, rectangle, oblong…etc. For the ingredient amounts in this recipe, I recommend a medium size dish, such as an 8-inch square casserole dish or a glass pie dish.
  • Feel free to add any of your favorite taco toppings to this dip, such as black beans, shredded lettuce, cilantro, just to name a few.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Is Taco Dip Good For In The Fridge?

Not only is this taco dip easy to make, but it is also perfect for making ahead of time because it can stay good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. However, if preparing more than a few hours in advance, I’d recommend skipping the avocado layer, as avocados may start to turn brown once exposed to air. Wrapping the dish tightly with plastic wrap and keeping refrigerated until serving time can help prevent this.

What Can You Serve With Taco Dip?

Of course, taco dip tastes amazing with tortilla chips, but there are so many other tasty options to try! Here are some of our favorite dippers to serve with taco dip:

  • Corn chips
  • Sliced veggies such as carrots, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, and jicama
  • Crackers
  • Crispy breadsticks
